Bristol’s SETsquared incubator has chosen Ashley Community Housing and Up Our Street as research partners for its innovative upcoming diversity and inclusion research project. 

The project aims to improve and increase the inclusion and representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) business founders applying to the incubator.

This is how empty properties in parts of Bristol have been brought back into use by charities and social enterprises. Six homes have been leased to the organisations by Bristol City Council after they were purchased in the 1960s and 70s - and some have been empty for around two years.

Mostly terraced houses, many were in need of complete renovation and refurbishment, having fallen into disrepair in recent years. Among those taking on the projects include Ashley Community Housing and 1625 Independent People.

Could looking to the UK's immigrant and refugee populations help businesses enhance the diversity of their workforces? We spoke to Monder Ram, professor at the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME); and Fuad Mahamed, CEO of Ashley Community Housing, who arrived in this country as a refugee and pointed out that the advantages of an ethnically diverse workplace extend to hiring refugees too.

A social enterprise that works to resettle refugees within Bristol’s communities has received a prestigious Lloyds Bank National Business Award. Ashley Community Housing won the title for the positive social impact it has on the city and beyond. 

“One piece of advice I would give people starting a business today is follow your ambitions and follow your dreams and set achievable goals,” said Jeff Greenidge, Director of Himilo training for Ashley Community Housing, on receiving the award."
