According to Fuad, ‘’There are over 100 million displaced individuals worldwide, and it is crucial for the world to come together and view migration and refugee agendas not as burdens, but as challenges that require collective support and action’’.

We had the opportunity to catch up with our CEO, Fuad Mahamed, upon his return from Geneva, where he participated as a UK delegate in the Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement (ATCR). The ATCR convened representatives from governments and organisations worldwide to discuss refugee resettlement and integration. Fuad shared his perspectives on the discussions and the key outcomes that align with our organisational goals.

The ATCR serves as a platform for different stakeholders to converge and share their perspectives on refugee resettlement and integration. It provides an opportunity for governments new to resettlement, as well as established ones like the UK, to discuss effective approaches and identify areas for improvement, thereby fostering a collaborative environment dedicated to finding impactful solutions.

One of the crucial topics addressed during the consultations was the importance of housing solutions. It was noted that housing remains a significant challenge globally and there was unanimous agreement on the dire need for effective solutions. According to Fuad, ‘’There are over 100 million displaced individuals worldwide, and it is crucial for the world to come together and view migration and refugee agendas not as burdens, but as challenges that require collective support and action’’.

Leveraging our organisation's expertise, Fuad shared insights on alternative housing models and highlighted ACH's 15 years of experience in collaborating with private sectors, councils, and housing associations. He underlined the importance of thinking beyond traditional solutions saying, ‘’Whilst local governments and social housing play a significant role, it is essential not to rely solely on them. Engaging landlords who share our cause, is a crucial step towards overcoming the housing crisis’’.

This approach, combined with ACH's successful implementation of alternative models like the ‘meanwhile use’ housing strategy, showcases our ability to think outside the box. By offering practical solutions, we contributed to the collective knowledge and demonstrated our commitment to empowering refugees, innovation, and thought leadership. Our lived experience also brought a unique perspective, shedding light on the realities of refugee resettlement.

Beyond the exchange of ideas, the ATCR provided an opportunity for forging partnerships as Fuad met decision-makers and individuals who shared our passion for creating a better world for refugees and migrants. The presence and input of the UN refugee commissioner further reiterated the value of lived experience in shaping effective strategies and policies.

The key outcomes and opportunities that emerged from the ATCR aligned perfectly with ACH's organisational goals and objectives. The emphasis on lived experience, sharing best practices, thinking creatively about housing solutions, and fostering collaborative working mirrored the ethos and approach of our organization. ACH's participation exemplified our commitment to making a positive impact in the resettlement landscape and through thought leadership, innovation, and collaboration, we can confront these challenges and create a world where every individual can thrive.
