Meet Rosie

Meet Rosie McLellan, our new Social Media and Digital Marketing Intern. Rosie has recently joined the ACH team to help us expand awareness of our work and #rethinkingrefugee campaign. Read more to find out about her previous work and goals for the future in this meet the team interview.

What did you do before coming to ACH?

Before joining ACH I studied for a Master’s in Human Geography and worked as Assistant Coordinator for a community magazine called Vocalise in Bristol. During my Master’s I focussed my studies on visual arts for social change, with a focus on environmental activism and climate change. Whilst working on a community magazine, I became interested in community journalism and the organisations in Bristol working to promote social inclusion and community projects.

Why did you decide to come to ACH?

I saw the Social Media and Digital Marketing Internship at ACH and thought it sounded like a perfect opportunity to build upon journalistic and marketing skills I had learnt in previous roles and internships. I really wanted a career where I could work to create space for the stories that mattered from within communities in Bristol, and challenge negative representations of refugees and migrants often seen in the media.

What project are you working on for us?

I am working on ACH’s #rethinkingrefugee campaign. Our campaign is a reaction against the negative portrayals of refugees and migrants in the media and government policy. We are working to highlight the talents, skills, aspirations and entrepreneurship of refugees and migrants.

Refugees contribute hugely to the economy and local communities, and we need to rethink and challenge the negative connotations of the word refugee so we can help people to build successful lives, careers and businesses.

What is it that you want to achieve?

I want to work with ACH and the marketing team to create conversations and narratives that destabilise stereotypes and focus on stories, achievements and support on an individual basis. Everyone has a different and unique story to tell and it is an exciting part of marketing that we get to seek out these narratives.

What are you hoping to gain from ACH?

I am hoping to gain more experience and knowledge about marketing and strategy. I am so excited to meet new people and organisations working in local communities to make Bristol an inclusive, welcoming and innovative place where there are opportunities for everyone. I feel extremely lucky to have an opportunity to learn and develop new skills in a fantastic organisation making a positive contribution to lives and communities.

What is your proudest moment in your career?

The proudest moment of my career so far was when I successfully applied for funding for a Community Energy Project during my time at Vocalise. The project helped local residents to find advice and support about reducing their energy costs and so made a positive change both economically and environmentally.
