Fair Saturday comes to Bristol
This year Bristol becomes the first English city to take part in Fair Saturday, a global cultural movement with a social impact. Beginning in Bilbao, Spain in 2014, Fair Saturday has since grown into a global festival. Taking place on Saturday 24th November 2018, Fair Saturday aims to unite culture and social causes as positive response to the rampant consumerism of “Black Friday”.
Fair Saturday Bristol aims to be part of this movement, harnessing the creativity and social conscience of our city, bringing together charities, businesses and cultural organisations to explore what it means to be a fair society, and raising funds to support social causes in the process.
We were thrilled to be part of this important cause. Fairness is key to the work we do, as we envisage a future where refugees are treated equally, and able to gain sustainable employment with fair wages.
Our contribution was to sponsor the community breakfast at Hamilton House which launches Fair Saturday, in collaboration with 91 Ways. This event invited cooks from communities across the city to cook and share a breakfast item which celebrates memories, flavours and traditions from around the world.
Write-up from the breakfast
The Fair Saturday breakfast was a huge success with over 40 attendees from various communities within the city and an array of representatives from Bristol organisations.
The event was kicked off by Marvin Rees who talked about how Fair Saturday Bristol started and what the hopes for the future are. Members of Fair Saturday also spoke about the importance of celebrating arts, culture and social causes in the city and talked about the range of different event happening across Bristol. Matt from ACH gave a brief talk about why we sponsored the event and 91 ways thanked everyone for coming and kicked off the breakfast.
The breakfast was fantastic with a mix of spicy breakfast foods, salads and lots of sweet treats. The room was full and buzzing with conversation over a homely meal.
We also had our video on display of one of our ex-tenants, Dereje, explaining what fairness means to him. You can watch this below.
Thank you to everyone who was a part of the Fair Saturday movement in Bristol, we look forward to taking part again next year!
