men, gender and displacement

Bristol Uni and ACH research outcomes

Text
We should rethink how we do research with communities - integration is a two-way street.

Over the past year, we have been working with Bristol University as part of a research project exploring men’s experience of displacement in Bristol. On 19th September we launched this research at an event held at the Wills Memorial Building.

The event was chaired by Dr Emma Williamson, Head of Centre for Gender and Violence Research at the University of Bristol. Emma was involved in another strand of similar research which focused on women and displacement.

Dr Nadia Aghtaie and Sue Cohen were the key researchers in the project and introduced the project as a whole to the group and shared the key findings. These included loss of power/authority, new family dynamics, sense of belonging and the differences between generations.

ACH were heavily involved in the project as our tenants and learners were participants of the research days. Fuad Mahamed, ACH CEO, and Abdi Mohamed, Director of ACH, talked about the importance of the project and working with Bristol University. A key message was that this was not just a one-time collaboration, but a spring-board for more involvement between ACH and the University of Bristol.

The event itself was well turned out and there were lots of interesting discussions on topics such as integration, how to engage the community, BAME role models and changing processes. The accompanying brochure brought together all the pieces of research which were expressed using poetry. You can view the full brochure here. Ending the event was a fantastic film by Edson Burton which focused on topics surrounding displacement here in the UK.
